The Ipê magic: the winter flower
This is the most exuberant time of the year. Between the months of August and September, the University of Rio Verde campus shines bright yellow from the ipê flowers, a very traditional event during final days of winter in Brazil. The flowering of the ipê trees coincides with the driest period of the Goiás Cerrado, bringing a feeling of relief and joy to those who walk around the Campus, because of the beautiful landscape, even in such dry conditions.
A straight or slightly tortuous tree, with rough bark, the ipê trees lose all their leaves and become covered in flowers, that pop up even from a distance. Curious enough, it is the high temperatures, a staple in the Goiás winter, that anticipates the flowering of the ipê trees, which explains why the trees flowered a little earlier at UniRV this year.
The yellow flowers announce the coming of spring. And as it a natural spectacle, its beauty is fleeing: on average, in a week, the flowers fall down and cover the ground in yellow. This is a moment when the seeds are taken by the wind, spreading the species.
And at the exact moment when the flowers are at their best, UniRV becomes the crowded scenario for couples, families, and children to take photos. Even those who practice sports usually transfer their paths to coincide with the main access to the Campus, in an attempt to experience a little bit of the yellow ipê magic.
A little bit of history
The ipê trees were planted at UniRV in 1989, by Forrest Engineer and professor Antônio Graciano Ribeiro (Tonhão) and by the Rio Verde Secretary for Agriculture, at the time, Avelar de Moraes Macêdo, with the participation of technicians Gerlos Mendonça de Moraes and Milton Kanaschiro.
The ipê tree is from the same family as the jacaranda and the same genus as tupi (floating wood). Natively from tupi, the word ipê means tree with thick bark and is the same name people call nine or ten other species with similar characteristics in white, yellow, pink, purple or lilac flowers.
Invitation
The first ipê flowers started to show up last Tuesday, so, for those who have not yet seen this year’s flowers, this is the right moment to make a visit to UniRV and enjoy, with us, the ipê season. When you post a photo on your social networks, tag UniRV in your feed and stories. Let’s help spread this beautiful site, which makes our University more beautiful.
