“Old Guard” Extension Project will be held in partnership with ABAS Association
University extension is the connection that is made between the University and the population. In general terms, is the way to give back to society what was acquired in the classroom and this has been one of the great legacies of the University of Rio Verde: acting significantly alongside the community through extension projects. To reinforce this extension commitment even further, it was launched, this Friday, May 12, the “Old Guard” project that will be developed by the Faculties of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine alongside the people benefitted by Associação Beneficente Auta de Souza (ABAS).
Idealized with the goal of creating and developing animal and plant production systems inside the Association’s “Casa do Campo” project, in which there will be the students’ participation, such as: Composting production to reuse food scraps and fertilizer production for use in vegetable gardens; organic vegetable production; vertical vegetable garden; beekeeping; poultry and fish raising and processing vegetable and animal origin products.
The project release had the participation of the Vice-Rector, professor and Pro-Rector of Graduation, Dr. Arício Vieira da Silva, representing the Rector, professor Alberto Barella Netto; the ABAS coordinator, Jorge Meneses de Carvalho; the director of the Faculty of Agornomy, professor Dr. Paulo Fernandes Boldrin and the project coordinator, professor Dr. Charles Barbosa Santos, apart from other professors, academics and guests. “With the participation of our students in this rural extension project we were once again able to strengthen actions through our partnership with ABAS, creating a great opportunity of spreading academic knowledge. With “Old Guard” we are promoting intergenerational living and through practical activities involving Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine students, contributing to the well-being of those assisted in “Casa do Campo”, comments Charles.
Funded on September 2003, the Associação Beneficente Auta de Souza (ABAS), currently has over 200 people being benefited, some of them who live in the institution itself. “The general goal of this project is to provide well-being to elders, with pleasing activities and experience exchange by the presence of academics. The partnership will most certainly add a lot to the over 200 people who are benefited at the Association,” highlights Jorginho.
To close the important launch, the Pro-Rector remembered the actions by the University of Rio Verde alongside the community and the important contribution to ABAS’s Old Guard. “The University of Rio Verde over the last 50 years has acted significantly alongside the community with countless extension projects. We are very happy in being able to accomplish this project alongside ABAS, that has helped elders for over 20 years”. Ponders Arício.
