Article discusses excessive daytime sleepiness in interns
Having a good night sleep is key for the organism to do its main regenerative functions, such as repairing tissues, muscle growth and synthesizing proteins. Trying to highlight the importance of this habit, professors and alumni of the University of Rio Verde, developed the scientific article “excessive daytime sleepiness in interns of a Brazilian university: prevalence and associated factors”, the research was published recently on the Ibero-American Magazine of Humanities, Sciences and Education – REASE.
The alumni Giulia Ugucioni Garbelini and André Vinícius de Oliveira under the guidance of professor Me. Marcelo Gomes Judice; Me. Ana Paula Felix Arantes and Dr. Renato Canevari Dutra da Silva did the paper through analysis of excessive daytime sleepiness (SDE), in interns of the Faculty of Medicine of UniRV. During the process the researchers collected the sociodemographic profile of health and lifestyle from students and also the level of daytime sleepiness through Epworth’s sleepiness scale (ESE).
The gathered data were inserted on the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to establish correlation between the daytime sleepiness scores obtained and the independent variables analyzed in this study through the Chi-Squared test. The prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness in the sample was of 65,5% and a statistically significant association was found with the presence of depression, the fact of studying during the morning, afternoon and evening and the low quality of sleep in the investigated academics.
“The sleep depravation medicine student interns are subjected in interpreted as a symbol of dedication to the profession, which, on the short term, seems to increase productivity, but, can lead to mental, physical and psychological deterioration, generating memory failures and sleep disorders such as excessive daytime sleepiness. The project discusses and analyzes exactly that”, comments the director of the Faculty of Dentistry, professor Dr. Renato Canevari.
UniRV’s Rector, professor Alberto Barella highlights that the publication of another scientific article enables the sharing of new findings and reinforces the discussion of important subjects: “The research is one of the bases of our institution, we posses a consolidated Scientific Initiation Program and we are reaping the rewards. Congratulations for publishing the article”.
