Humanized treatment motivates patients in the Physiotherapy School Clinic
That sound that rummages the hallways of the Physiotherapy School Clinic comes out of Mr. Carlos Martins’s violin, he, who charms patients, students and professors for being able to play his first notes after having a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and having that left the left side of his body paralyzed. Emotional for having recovered his movements, Mr. Carlos has a smile on his face as he lifts his arm, which, little by little, starts moving again. At least three times a week he does physiotherapy at the Clinic and his bond with the students and professors, stemming from the violin, motivates him in his recovery.
“I’m happy because today I already have more mobility. Before, my hand didn’t move and I couldn’t move my foot, so, I can’t help but share this achievement”, says the patient, highlighting, in this process, the importance of music, which has been in his life for 26 years.
For Leonardo da Silva Pereira Filho, a 9th period Physiotherapy student, understanding a patient’s main objectives is fundamental in order to have an effective and humane treatment. Under the supervision of the teaching staff, the student does the appointments with Mr. Carlos, helping with the movements and executing exercises specifically designed for the recovery of the most affected parts by the CVO. The student, who is about to graduate, talks excitedly about the experiences acquired at the School Clinic. “A patient’s goal becomes our own as well. Since day one, Mr. Carlos commented that he would like to play the violin again, so, we’ve been dedicating ourselves to make that happen and we can already see some evolution”, states the academic.
With ten different internship areas, UniRV’s Physiotherapy School Clinic has over two thousand appointments every month, offering an important service to the population of Rio Verde and region. The appointments are done through a medical requirement and obey a triage in order to select patients. According to the Physiotherapy course director, professor Me. Marcos de Godoy, aside from offering students a space for practical learning, the Clinic seeks to spotlight the importance of forming professionals who understand the real necessities of each patient, “Stories like Mr. Carlos’s are precious opportunities for our personal and professional growth”, emphasizes the professor.
