First Abóbora Runners Race - Marina Magalhães promoted the inclusion of PWD
The first edition of the Abóbora Runners Race - Marina Magalhães took place on Sunday, February 5th, with the participation of over 230 people and promoted the inclusion of People With Disabilities (PWD). The initiative was born inside the Engineering Dreams Program, an extension project of the University of Rio Verde, created by professor Paula Reys with the participation of 5 Faculties.
With the goal of paying respects to the Paralympic athlete Marina Magalhães, daughter of the project creator, who was born on February 7th and passed away at the age of 14 in July 18th, 2022, the street race relied on UniRV’s support in a partnership with City Hall, through the Secretary of Sport and Leisure. There were 5 and 10 kilometer races, awarding the first three to finish in each category, male and female, including PWD categories.
The event, programed to happen annually, on the first Sunday of February, should become a tradition in Rio Verde. “It’s a very strong emotion, mainly because of the legacy that Marina passed on to me, which is the inclusion of people with disabilities in sport. My heart is filled with love and happiness. My mission now is to make this race a tradition and making people aware of the importance of including people with disabilities,” commented Paula Reys.
A supporter of many projects that promote an incentivize physical activities, and conscious of the importance of including PWD in competitions, the Rector, professor Alberto Barella Netto congratulated the accomplishment of such a project and reiterated his support of actions predicated in awareness. “I’m glad when I see a project of such greatness happening, mainly because I’m a big proponent of sports and of actions such as this, that include people who until now were unable to participate in competitions. Congratulations to professor Paula for this initiative,” he concluded.
